Well, I've been busy....

So I have been getting the chance to check out the music scene in Texas as a freelance player over the last couple months and it has been a ball. I've been playing dance halls, bars, coffee shops and all sorts of places with some very talented people. here is some stuff I have coming up over the next week or so:

Weds 7/21 7:30 to 9:30 I'm playing with Jenifer Jackson at Botticelli's on South Congress in Austin. Lucy will be there !

Thurs 7/22 5:15 to 6:15 with Pete Minda at Momo's in Austin

Friday 7/23 with Brian Pounds in Dallas at The Opening Bell Coffeehouse

Saturday 7/24 with The Blue Broussard band at the Cheatham St. Warehouse in San Marcos

Monday and Tues 7/26 and 7/27 Playing a corporate gig of some sort with local Austin legend Shae who needs no last name up in Dallas

Weds 7/28 I'm playing with Jenifer Jackson at Flipnotics in Austin from 6:00 till 7:30

7/29, 7/30, 7/31 In Vinton, Louisiana at the Delta Downs Casino with Brian pounds. Full band. Also Brian and I are doing a duet thing in Lake Charles on the 31st at the Porch Coffeehouse.

I am starting to put my own band together also. We will be playing music that is in the lofty world of self indulgence with no particular purpose. I am hoping to use the medieval practice of the hocket while playing The Girl from Ipanema at some point in public. I tell you the will kids go nuts for that shit !

Oh yea, I got a cowboy hat and figured out how to make my delay pedal make everything go backwards so all is well.

So I am now playing steel on the road with Wayne Hancock. I came in as an emergency sub and ended up taking the full time position. Its a super fun gig playing with some great musicians. Wayne is the real deal when it comes to this scene. So far its been a joy for me. I'll be touring pretty constantly so keep an eye out for him and you will see me soon. I am also moving to Austin Tx as my home base. I will miss Brooklyn and my friends there. I love my little neighborhood of Red Hook. Austin is looking pretty sweet also.

Feb 28th at 9:00 I'm playing with my own band at Jalopy in Brooklyn. We will be playing some of my own new music/ improvisational compositions along with other pieces with a few of the greatest players on the planet in a jazz quartet format.

I am doing a show of my own at Barbes 8:00 on Thursday the 21st

And I'll be playing pedalsteel. The music is a sort of improvised chamber music.
The players are really amazing and will have plenty of opportunity to stretch out.

Barbes is at 9th st and 6th ave in Park Slope Brooklyn. It is my favorite listening room in Brooklyn.

Well I haven't been keeping up with my internet self promotion these days. I've been so busy rockin for the people on my steel guitar that I have been neglecting the internet. I figured it would get by fine without me for a couple weeks. I was thinking about learning how to work on my website because it is getting patheticly out of date. But every time I think about learning that stuff I find myself more interested in transrcibing a Johnny Hodges solo. Or walking around with my dog. Or eating a cookie. Or taking a nap....

One of my first steel guitar gigs was playing with Patsy Montana at the Cowgirl back then. I was one of those mid level management guys with a couple screws loose that just sorta wandered off the grid. The things I wanted cost time instead of money and the job thing was really cutting into my day.

Now the well groomed masses have discovered it along with there families powerful credit ratings. Its still a great place though.

July 1 sunday night. Well, they wanted me to stay in Boston at some fancy all expenses paid hotel making tons of money and playing with a high falutin orchestra but I had a gig at Hank's . I wouldn't want to miss those rough girls pile driving Sean Kershaw's head into the dance floor or hanging brain show and neither should you !

July 2nd I'm at Barbes with Smokey Hormel's Western Roundup at 10:00. We don't get a chance to play much this summer and this is a great place to see the band.

July 4th Smokey and the guys are at Jalopy. We should get going around 10:00.

July 6th its Drazy Hoops at The Living Room . This is a full band show.

Later that night I'm playing with Max Greene at Banjo Jim’s around midnight.

On the 7th I have a gig at 68 Jay st in Dumbo around 9:00 with J.Walter Hawks and Tim Luntzel. We will play a bunch of old standards and sub standards.

I saw a big sign on the building that it is a fantastic development spot for sale so I guess the rich fuckers backed out on knocking it down to put up some more piece of shit luxury condos for the time being. The luxury condo building next door went up in about a week and is made out of some prefab flimsy junk you could poke your fist through with very little effort.

June 26 and 27 Hem is playing with the Boston Pops in Boston. I'll wear a nice shirt for that bad boy !

June 28 its JC Hopkins at the Rodeo Bar . This should be a real fun show.

June 29 I'm playing with Meg from the Roulette Sisters at Sunny's in Red Hook. This is the greatest bar in the world and you get to hear Meg's tunes and meet Lucy the dog. What more could you want ?

Okay, So I have been a little remiss in my gig updates. For any of you that may be wondering I have been very busy playing the pedalsteel for the people and rocking in the proper idiomatic style depending on the particular situation. Anyhoo I am playing
may 16th at Club Europa
with Sean Kershaw and the New
Jack Ramblers. It should be a weird one in a world of weird ones. My favorite part of playing Club Europa is the complete distain the Polish babe bartenders have for any non Polish guy. If the poor dudes tip to much they get treated even worse. It will be great to see Klaus Flouride
again. I used to hang with him in San Fransisco. Now that was a fun scene !

Thursday the 17th I'm playing new country tunes for some rich kids at a Princeton dining club. I was thinking about wearing a bomb belt but decided to save it for a shot at Kenny Chesney if I ever get the chance.

Monday 9th its the Knitting Factory at 10:00 with Derek Lee Bronston. Very strong players are working with this great singer songwriter. It looks like we go on around 9:30. I'll be there early to check out the other bands.

weds the 11th is Smokey's Roundup. Its a great little western swing band with some amazing players. We will be at The Lakeside Lounge on the lower east side around 9:00. Don't miss this rare chance to see this band in manhattan. The crossing of the great waters is quite a big deal for us.

Sat the 14th the mighty Hem plays a fesival of some sort in Norfolk Viginia.

After driving like a demon I will be rocking again at Hank's with Sean Kershaw on sunday the 15th. I will be crispy. But it can be better that way.

Well, I hope you didn't drive to Phila to see me with Matt Keating because I wasn't there. I was teaching upstate and then playing for the people with Jan Bell at Superfine. Its been very busy for me these days so the crazy long drive to Narrowsburg was kinda relaxing. I listened to hours of Sinatra from his capitol years. That music is so strong. I find myself coming back to it all the time. Like Beethoven's 7th with all that trancendent joy pouring into that heartbreaking adagio and then rocking out by the end.

Anyhoo..... tonight (friday 12/15) I'm in Blauvelt,NY with "The New Romans". Its near Nyack.
12/16 I'm in the studio all day making rock history with Smokey's Roundup. No gigs so watch out people, I've got a cel phone and I'm feeling social !

Weds the 22nd and 29th I'm at Sunny's in Red Hook with Smokey hormel's western band. This is a great local yokal scene. Its like Floyd's barber shop with a old time swing band playing in the corner. If it seems like everybody knows each other there its because they do. It gets rolling around 9:30. For me its great to play with such good musicians. Some real legends show up for the Smokey gig.

Sunny's is at 253 Conover st 11231 if you want to google map it. Its a little out of the way but is a very special place.

Then on sunday the 26th Its Sean Kershaw at Hank's ! Real music in a real dive for real people. Real drunk people. It gets going around 10:00 and is always fun. I figure this sunday will be a good one because there will have been plenty of quality time spent with families this week and drinking at Hank's is cheaper than a shrink.

Knitting Factory with The Glaciers. This should be starting late around midnight down in the old office. This is a real good indie rock band with some great songs and great players.

Weds the 1st I'm at Sunny's in Red Hook with Smokey hormel's western band. This is a great local yokal scene. Its like Floyd's barber shop with a old time swing band playing in the corner. If it seems like everybody knows each other there its because they do. It gets rolling around 9:30.

I've been out on the road for a few weeks with Hem. The shows have been great. Whatever it is that happens that makes playing music a real joy happens consistantly with these guys. For most of the tour we have been traveling with a clarinet, harp and violin player. Its really working. If you make it to a gig make sure you say hello.

Sept 21 8:00 I'll be playing with Sunny's wife Tuna at Sunny's in Red Hook.
Sept 23 its Hem at Irving Plaza. If you haven't seen Hem yet you gotta check it out. Its some sort of Jewish holiday so it should be easy to get tickets for this one.

I may fly in to play a gig at the 55 Bar on oct 17th. Its the 7:00 to 9:00 slot. It with this new music band that just got going called "A Thousand Oaks" unless we come up with a better name before then. Pretty killing players doing something unique. Jonathon Haffner: Alto, Chris Lightcap: Bass,Dan Weiss: Drums and they let me tag along and play my Pedal steel.

Smokey's Western Combo will be back at it once the dust clears also. We may try to pinch off a little gig if I get 2 consecutive free hours while I'm in LA with Hem on the 13th of sept.

8/28 10:00 Smokey's Western Combo atBarbes . This is great band playing in one of the best listening rooms in Brooklyn.
Then at midnight I'll be at the Ear Inn down on spring st in Manhattan with Dawn Landes . Another great old bar.

Then weds Smokey is playing again at Sunny's around 9:30. It should be a big night there.
More of a walk through the band to get to the bathroom sort of scene.

9/2 Its Drazy Hoops in Madison Wi. Some big festival by a radio station there. I hope its not outdoors. I get cranky with all my stuff blowing around or being scorched by the sun or having my hands cramp up from the cold.

9/3 back at Hanks for the late set if I make it in time.

We will be playing at the Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo at noon on saturday though.

Weds the 9th I'll be at Sunny's bar in Red Hook. This is the Smokey Hormel western band. Its a great scene over there. Maybe the best bar in the world. Anyway, it is within a couple blocks of my apt which ups its status quite a bit in my book. The music and musicians are some of the best I have ever dealt with. Plus Lucy the dog will be there. Sorry I have been remiss in my gig blog. I've been busy moving up the street to a new place in Red Hook and running from one thing to the next.

Anyhoo, here is some live gigs coming up:

July 25 9:30 Sean Kershaw at Rodeo Bar . The band is getting to be pretty darn good. I've been having a bunch of fun with them. Its free.

July 26 9:30 its Smokey Hormel's Western band at Sunny's (253 Conover St 11231) in Red Hook. This is a warm up gig for our big show at Tonic the next day.

He will be playing songs from the repertoire of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, Spade Cooley and of course, Mr. Cash. With Bob Hoffnar (electric steel guitar), George Rush (upright bass), Andrew Borger (drums) & Doug Wieselman (clarinet).

I'll be playing my old Fender Stringmaster on this one.

Aug 4th 8:00 I'm playing Barbes with Queen Esther . She is a great singer. I go to hear her sing even if I'm not in the band. After us is the Moonlighters at 10;00. Besides the great singing and tunes you have Mike Neer playing an old national tricone slide. The guy is a wizard.

Aug 5th 8:00 at Barbes its THE JONATHON HAFFNER QUARTET with Bob Hoffnar pedal steel; Jonathon Haffner - alto; Chris Lightcap - Bass and Dan Weiss - drums. This will be a new music/jazz sort of gig. I'm excited about his one. The players are amazing and we may even rehearse !

Aug 6th 10:00 The Stone With the Jonathon Haffner Quartet again. We may take it a bit more out and add some players for this one. I'll update as the info comes in.

I'll announce this here because nobody reads my blog anyway and it looks like it will take me till mid july to get it together. JIm Pitman makes my favorite pickups for pedal steel. Humbucking but with an open full sound. He doesn't have time to build them now so he sold me the winding machine and spent a couple days training me how to do it his way. There are about a zillion little details and each one is critical so I have my work cut out for me. When i'm ready to go and fully confident of the quality I'll put up a web page and and get things going. I'm not looking to mass produce these things at all. If I can make a pickup or 2 once a week and get them to people who like them I'll be happy.

This week I'm back in the studio with Hem all week. The sessions are going great. We are recording everything live in a big room. The session I played this afternoon for Erin Sax was live also. It seems like the music does more of whatever the good stuff music does when everybody gets together and bangs away at the same time.

I just played a batch of fantastic gigs at Zebulon. Butch Morris conductions with a Kenny Wollensen/Jonathon Haffner cast of caractures. At the end of the last set most everybody left the stage and some guy from Mali was playing this beautiful music while Kenny, the bass player, Bill Ware (vibes) and I played along. The whole thing felt like a cool fresh breeze blowing through me.

Its going to be hard getting to rehearsals for a couple gigs I have this week with everything going on. In any case on:

3/23 I'm at The Lakeside Lounge with Max Greene . Its a Cd release party that should be fun.

Not many live gigs this week. The one worth catching is on Thursday 3/9 with Don Dilego . We are playing at The Living Room downtown. The Living Room is a great hip club to see music at where you can pay the same price for a coke that they charge the bands ! The bald big tough cream puff bartender with tatoos is a real asshole. I have watched him have truly great players tossed out by security because they dared to complain when he took there drinks away before they were done. He has pulled that same shit with another buddy of mine that packs that place once a week. What a fucking tool !
Anyway, Don is great and the band is well worth seeing. Order your drinks from the girls in the music room. They are sweethearts.

3/10 friday night in Red Hook with Shotgun Shack at the deisel gallery 242 Van Brunt St. We should get going by 9:00 and Paranoid Larry will be doing whatever he does also. This an art opening.
